El objetivo de este estudio fue describir el origen y la evolución de los diferentes reglamentos del waterpolo que han existido a lo largo de sus casi ciento cincuenta años de historia y su posible influencia en la dinámica del juego. Se realizó un análisis de contenido de los textos publicados en papel por la Fédération Internationale de Natation, centrándose en la semántica, a partir de algunas categorías clave de este deporte. La principal conclusión es que se han realizado muchos cambios reglamentarios a lo largo de los años. Sin embargo, no existen pruebas científicas de sus efectos en la dinámica del juego.
El waterpolo es un deporte de equipo joven producto de la Revolución Industrial (Lloret, 1994). En sus inicios, el waterpolo era aproximadamente un juego parecido al rugby que se jugaba en el agua, sin reglas oficiales establecidas, en el que todo valía y cada uno resolvía las situaciones por su cuenta. Se jugaba sin portería o con la portería más grande jamás vista, y los jugadores tenían que depositar el balón detrás de la línea de fondo del otro equipo. No se podía tirar a puerta, teniendo que llegar a la meta con el balón en los brazos.
